Cynicism About Television – A Cliché Or An Important Point?
Although the number of people in the world who do not watch TV is admittedly small, there are still numerous individuals who are highly cynical about television and can be quite caustic about people who watch a lot of it. Is such cynicism justified? Well, it really depends on the tone and the focus of the criticism expressed. If someone says that television is responsible for the dumbing down of this world, it may seem a persuasive view, but the fact is that things are not that simple.
TV news programs, educational broadcasts and documentaries play a major part in actually enriching people’s knowledge. Some dramas and comedies are so well made that only the most pig-headed of individuals could deny that they have value. It is highly possible for someone with an incredible intellect to enjoy a lot of what is on TV. Without a doubt there are some shows on television in the present day which are so badly conceived and put together that one can feel oneself getting dumber the longer they go on. However, this should not be used as a criticism of television as a whole.
To say that TV is bad, and that television programs lead to people getting dumber, is a very one-sided view. It would be accurate to say that some TV is awful, and that some programs are bad enough to make you wonder how they ever got made. However, the key is to not watch those. You don’t have to watch everything on television – most people don’t.
