Stopping environmental destruction and deforestation is something that requires a lot of hard work and a great deal of patience. The environment is an ongoing concern – it will always be something that we need to maintain, so it is not a battle that can be definitively won. Activism for the sake of fashion – and it is something that happens – is rarely if ever beneficial because once you have got that “warm feeling” from doing your bit to help, the imperative is lost and the battle is weakened.
If you want to act against deforestation it is much better to look at what you can do on a grass-roots level than simply to put money in a collection jar or put on a T-shirt. Whether you act by getting involved at a political level, or by volunteering for a charity, or by adopting a lifestyle that benefits the rainforests, the action needs to be ongoing and lasting if it is to be successful. There will hopefully be a time when the rainforests are no longer under threat, but it may well not come in our lifetime.
It is best to get involved on a local level first. The longer you are involved, the more of a part you can play in saving the rainforests. To truly act against deforestation takes strength of character, but it is worth it. You must remember, though, to keep in mind what is possible and what is reasonable in trying to convince other people to act with the environment in mind. You will achieve a lot more by being informative and positive than by being patronising and accusatory.
