The British Film Institute’s London Film Festival screens at least three hundred films from sixty different countries worldwide annually. The British Film Institute has presented the London Film Festival annually for over fifty years. The British Film Institute was establish by the Commission of Educational and Cultural Films and the British Institute for Adult Education in 1929 so that it would produce information regarding on the use of films for education, the enhancement of the audience’s appreciation on films and lastly for the founding of a permanent core agency to achieve all of the above mentioned aims.
The recently concluded British Film Institute’s London Film Festival was sponsored by “The Times” newspaper. And on the 50th year of the London Film Festival, it will screen the very best films from the wide variety of “world cinema”. The term world cinema refers to foreign films or films that are of non English language countries. The 50th British Film Institute’s London Film Festival will run from the 18th of October year 2006 and will end on the 2nd of November year 2006. The 50th British Film Institute’s London Film Festival will be screened at the National Film Theatre for the first time throughout the history of the British Film Institute’s London Film Festival.
The most prestigious award for the British Film Institute’s London Film Festival is “The Sutherland Trophy”. The latest awardee of The Sutherland Trophy was the film “The Living and the Dead”. The Living and the Dead was directed by Kari Paljakka. The FIPRESCI International Critics Award winner was Ramin Bahrani. Ramin Bahrani is the director of “Man Push Cart”. The FIPRESCI is an international organization of film critics of the whole world. The FIPRESCI is short for short for “Federation Internationale de la Presse Cinematographique” or more known as “Internal Federation of Film Critics”. The FIPRESCI has been around for almost seventy years and is popularly known to participate in all of the juries of major international film festivals throughtout the world.
Another award for the British Film Institute’s London Film Festival is “The Alfred Dunhill United Kingdon Film Talent Award”. The lastest winner for the said award is the producer Gayle Griffiths. The aim of this award is to support the new and emerging talents of the film industry in United Kingdom. Gayle Griffiths produced the “Song of Songs”, which was the film program of the same year.
The Times British Film Institute’s London Film Festival Grierson Award went to “Workingman’s Death”. Workingman’s Death was directed by Michael Glawogger. This kind of award is the newest and has only been given the the same year. This award was given to the director of the best documentary film in the festival.
