National anthems nowadays are only given the limelight during the start of boxing matches and basketball games. And sadly, not all the citizens of the country know the complete lyrics by heart. If it was against the law not to know one’s national anthem, what percentage of the population would be in jail?

Countries all over the world take pride in their flags as much as they do in their national anthems. Some created their own patriotic hymns in a rushed fashion, while others spend centuries putting the words and music together.

The national anthem of Switzerland has the luxury of time. It was composed in the year 1841, but adopting it took about 140 years. Most people believe that the Swiss are likely uncomfortable with it, and in fact, they seem to be so still. A survey conducted among the Swiss revealed that majority of the population is not aware of the full context of the national anthem of Switzerland. Furthermore, the survey made among those between 15 and 29 years old, exposed the thought that a mere one percent of them know the full lyrics.

Swiss Psalm, the national anthem of Switzerland, was initially performed in the same year that it was composed. Right after its first performance, it was then played at the various events in the country. Even with this vast exposure, it did not obtain its status as national anthem of Switzerland until the year 1981.

The Swiss Psalm was not the only contender for the title. Another “rival”, When you call us, Fatherland” was used to be as widely-used as the Swiss Psalm was. However, because its tune was the same as that of the British’ “God Save the Queen”, the Swiss had to give it up to prevent further awkward circumstances between the two countries. The Federal Council initiated a competition in 1961 to find the most suitable national anthem of Switzerland. Unfortunately, they did not find a better alternative to the original Swiss Psalm from amongst the numerous entries. Thus, in 1981, the Swiss Psalm was officially named as the national anthem of Switzerland.

Up to this date, the Swiss Psalm maintains few supporters. Another attempt to change the national anthem of Switzerland was made in 1998, when musician Christian Jakob presented his composition in public. There were positive responses to the simple tune although the text was greatly opposed by some.

The national anthem of Switzerland shouldn’t be about how exciting the tune is. One’s appreciation for the national anthem depends in his real love and respect for his country. After all, that is what patriotism is all about.
