Severe Weather Safety at Home

Severe weather happens, and no matter what form it takes, severe weather is always a dangerous situation. It’s important that you prepare your home and educate yourself to deal with the worst while you are hoping for the best so that you, your family, and even your pets can weather the storm and live to tell the tale. Hurricanes and tornadoes are the two main weather threats.

Hurricanes: Weather forecasting has come a very long way. Today we are told days (even weeks) in advance when a hurricane is approaching. Sometimes where the hurricane will make landfall can’t be determined until a few hours before it happens, but the warnings that it is coming are given well in advance.

If you live in a hurricane-prone area, you should always keep one ear glued to weather forecasting during hurricane season. If the order comes to evacuate, evacuate! Don’t be stupid. You can’t hold your house down and keep it from blowing away or washing away. Board up your windows. Pack your survival gear and get the heck out!

Tornadoes: Tornadoes can happen with little or no warning. So during severe thunderstorms and at any time of the year, be aware that a tornado is a possibility. Listen to your local weather forecasts and if you are told to seek cover, do so and do so immediately.

You should have an area prepared in your home. If you don’t have a storm cellar, gather survival supplies and store them near an inside hallway on the lower level of your home. Pull pillows and mattresses off of beds and cover yourself and your family with them. Even if your house blows away, your odds of survival are very good.
