Wakeboard towers exist to add stability when a rider is catching air whilst wakeboarding. Wakeboard towers also allow the traditional support cable to be removed amongst other benefits including having a double usage of being used for lighting and speaker systems!
There are several different types of wakeboard tower designs. Each brand and design differs however they are usually based around a particular model.
There are cage towers, swooped cage towers, arch towers, reverse swooped towers, roll bar towers, swooped roll bar towers and cast aluminum towers.
Some of the most popular wakeboard tower manufacturers (who build some of the above mentioned tower types) include Air Boom Air Bar, Barewest Mini, Boss Slider, Joystick Roll Cage, New Dimension Towers, Phat Budde Twister and Xtreme Phat Tower and Pro Flight Swoop.
Wakeboard towers are now becoming quite popular therefore many ski boat makers have an optional tower for buyers. Buyers should undertake some research before deciding on a tower due to the vast array of types and designs.
There are two materials used to make wakeboard towers. They are aluminum and stainless steel. Aircraft grade aluminum tubing is used on some towers whilst others whilst others are built with extremely strong stainless steel. Aircraft aluminum is the most popular wakeboard tower material however others prefer stainless steel due to its advantages with salt water and severe weather conditions.
Wakeboard towers are not cheap. They can cost up to $5000 and beyond for a fully loaded tower. You can however pick up a bare bones tower for under $1000.
You should be happy with the style of tower on your boat and should always purchase from a reputable manufacturer or reseller.
Also consider a used tower, just make sure its on excellent condition before purchasing a second hand wakeboard tower.
